Objective: Students will be able to use context clues in order to determine the meanings of new vocabulary words.

Do-Now: Exit Slip: Syllabus Quiz - This was supposed to be your Exit Slip from yesterday.  This quiz will be graded based on whether or not you attempt each question, NOT on whether or not the questions are correct (so DON'T cheat!)  Make an attempt to answer every question and you will receive a full TEN points.  Writing "I don't know" or "IDK" ARE NOT acceptable answers.

Today: 1) Mind Game: Cryptogram - The first person to decode the message wins a prize!

2) Using context to discover the meaning of vocabulary words:

Practice #1 (We'll do this set together)

1. To combat their receding hairlines, some men will comb their hair over their bald spots.

2. My Kindergarten teacher tried to be as disarming as possible so that her students wouldn't be so scared of being at school.

3. If we have more snow days, the school year will most likely be prolonged until the end of June.

4. Not wearing your seatbelt is an imprudent decision.

5. The athlete surmounted his injuries and was able to make a comeback to win the gold medal.

Practice #2 (Do this set on your own)

1. The loud thunder during the storm woke up everyone in the house, but the dog remained unruffled.

2. The temperature will invariably be cold every winter and hot every summer.

3. Some people find sports to be diverting, but I think they're very boring.

4. Instead of sticking to my grocery list, I bought many items on impulse.

5. My little brother tried to hide in my closet to scare me, but I saw his foot protruding from underneath the door and decided to scare him instead.


3) Copy words, definitions, and parts of speech for your TEN new vocabulary words on pg. 4 in your Elements of Literature Books: receding, disarming, prolonged, imprudent, surmounted, unruffled, invariably, diverting, impulse, protruding

4) SAT Word Challenge: In groups, read the sentences containing TWENTY SAT vocabulary words and attempt to determine the meanings based on context clues.  The winning team gets a prize!

Exit Slip: Describe how to use context clues in order to determine the meaning of words.

Homework: Bring in a NEW notebook for this class by MONDAY!!!  Vocab Test #1 on your TEN new words will be Friday, February 14!!!
